MY CURRENT FAVORITE SCENTS:
When it comes to perfume shopping I have to admit— I start with my eyes, not my nose. I’m a sucker for beautiful bottles and glamorous packaging. Come on, who doesn’t want something that’s as pretty as it smells? Looking for your next vanity-worthy scent is the easy part, finding something you’ll love to wear season after season? That’s a different story.
I’ve tried, returned, and rebought enough fragrances that I’d like to think I have scent shopping down to a science. If you’re on the hunt for your signature scent or are just looking for a new perfume to add to the collection, here’s how to streamline the process.
OUTFIT DETAILS:
SHOP, SHOP, SHOP
Before you splurge, smell everything. Jk! But seriously, do your due diligence. Don’t just go for the big names or the hyped releases. You never know, you may fall in love with a lesser known brand or a classic scent.
Be sure to take a whiff of coffee beans between testing to clear your senses and if you can get a sample made (they’ll do it at every department store and Sephora) take advantage. Give yourself a few days to make a final decision.
KNOW THE LINGO
Before you shop for a perfume online, do a quick search for one of your favorite fragrances and learn it’s ingredients. You don’t have to know the difference between sandalwood and agarwood, just look up your go-to perfume and look for something with a similar ingredients list. (This will also help when shopping in stores, too. You’ll get much further with a sales associate if you say something like, “I like Bergamot and Clementine” as opposed to “I’m looking for something spring-y.”)
Some of my favorite scents are Patchouli and blackberry which is why I’m loving the new Gucci Guilty Absolute Pour Femme. For my perfume lovers out there who hate the way a scent can change throughout the day— this one doesn’t! It’s created to maintain the same scent from the moment you apply it.
ROLL WITH IT
If you’re not quite ready to make a full on fragrance commitment, look for a rollerball version. They’re super affordable, great for travel, and you can keep ‘em in your bag for touch-ups.
